The Hatfield's and McCoy's is the famous true story of a near 30 year feud in the last half of the 1800's between two mountain families. What started the feud in which two states did it take place? The Civil war started the feud when Devil Anse Hatfield, who fought for the Union and lived near present day Matewan, West Virginia, formed a band of guerrillas, crossed the Tug River and raided the lands of Randolph "Ranel" McCoy, who fought for the Confederacy and lived in Kentucky. The feud began in 1861 and lasted until 1891.

The Welland Canal is in Canada, is 27 miles long and has locks which lift ships 326.5 feet. Why is the canal significant to the United States? The canal connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie west of Niagara Falls. It is important to the United States, as well as Canada, because it allows major shipping to travel from Duluth, Minnesota all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
