Territory Name Origin:
Named by Christopher Columbus as Santa Ursula y las Once
Mil Vírgenes, shortened to Las Vírgenes, after Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. Fun Territory Facts:
The three largest US Virigin Islands are St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John have a
population of 121,000.
The land area is 140 square miles and the highest point is Crown Mountain on St.
Thomas at 1544 feet above sea level. The Virgin Islands were discovered in 1493 by
Columbus and occupied by the Danish and British. In
1917 the United States purchased the Danish occupied islands. The islands are a major
stopping points for
crusie ships and two thirds of St. John is a beautiful national park. Just to the
east are the British Virgin
Islands.
