Alaska
"the forty ninth state" quarter struck by
the mint on
July 10, 2008 |
 |
| The quarter's stateside face depicts a mama Grizzly bear
with a salmon in her mouth and an offspring undernearth. "The Great
Land" eludes to the last frontier. The backdrop is a small waterfall with spruce
trees and the north star shinning down. These all symbolize Alaska's vastness, dirverse
enviornment, and it's fishing industry. |

boundaries and 12,248 km of land boundaries. The land boundaries are with three countrys.
What are they?
Village of Little Diomede in the Bering Strait of Alaska. One
mile to Russia and it's cool. The inside passage is warmer. |

State Name Origin:
The Russians adopted the word, meaning "great lands" of "land that is not
an island," from
the Aleutian word alakashak.
Fun State Facts:
Alaska has a population of 609,200, 48th in the nation. Its land area is 570,374 square
miles, 1st
in the nation. The highest point is Mount McKinley at 20,320 feet above sea level.
The answer
to Bits of History question 2 on the coin album is Juneau. Barrow is the
northern most city in the
United States. The sun never sets for 82 days in the summer and never rises for 60
days in the
winter. William Seward, the Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln, purchased
Alaska from
Russia in 1867 for 2 cents an acre. Eareckson Air Station is located about 1500 miles
southwest
of Anchorage. Going from Barrow to Eareckson is like traveling from Los
Angeles to Chicago.
