California
"the thirty first state" quarter struck by
the mint on
January 17, 2005 |
 |
| The quarter's stateside face depicts a statute of John
Muir looking at Yosemite National Park's Half Dome rock face with a Condor ready to
attack. Conders are vultures and the largest birds of prey, nearly 4' long with a 9 to 10'
wingspan. They are known to attack living animals as large as a deer. John Muir was a
famous naturalist and was responsible for Congress passing legislation in 1890
establishing Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks. |
