State Name Origin:
In his search for the "Fountain of Youth," Ponce de Leon named this region
"flowery Easter"
or "feast of flowers" on Easter Sunday 1513.
Fun State Facts:
Florida has a population of 14,701,200 4th in the nation. Its land area is 53,997 square
miles,
26th in the nation. The highest point is in Walton County near Paxton at 435 feet above
sea
level. The Southernmost Point in the United States is a bouy monument in Key West. It has
been defined as that point of land that the monument sits on. It has been moved over time.
In 1763 Florida was divided into East Florida with its capital in St. Augustine and West
Florida
with its capital in Pensacola. The Everglades "river of grass" is a unique
flowing river, about
120 miles long, up to40 miles wide and only inches deep that drains Lake Okeechobee into
the Florida Bay which has about 10,000 islands.
