Facts 1 - 50 State Quarters
April 13, 2008
The quarter is Cupro-Nickel Clad - 8.33% Ni
and 91.67% Cu.
It weighs 5.670
grams with a diameter of 0.955 inches
and a thickness of 1.75 millimeters. It
has a reeded edge
with 119 reeds and a circulation span of 25 years.
Production of the State Quarters
started in 1999 and
will last ten years with
five
quarters issued each year in the order that the
states entered the union. The Hawaii
quarter will be issued in 2008. During the ten years time the production of the Washington
Eagle Quarter will be suspended. The quarters are minted in
Denver and Philadelphia;
hence, a complete set will be 100 quarters.
The new quarter program has
resulted in a huge increase in quarter production.
In 1998 - 1,867,400,000 Eagle
quarters were produced.
In 1999 & 2000 - 10,901,872,000
State quarters were produced.
In 2001 & 2002 - 8,220,288,000 State quarters
were produced.
In 2003 & 2004 - 4,682,400,000 State quarters were produced.
In 2005 & 2006 - 5,938,400,00 State quarters were produced.
In 2007 - 2,712,440,000 State quarters were produced.
Approximately 2 per capita of each state quarter for collecting only.
Virginia, the 10th state
leads in total production with 1,594,616,000 quarters.
Connecticut, the 5th state, is second with 1,346,624,000 quarters.
South Carolina, the 8th state, is third with
1,308,784,000 quarters.
New York, the eleventh state, is fourth with 1,275,040,000 quarters.
Maine, the 23rd state, is last with 448,800,000 quarters.
As the program grows the older quarters increase in
value. Brilliant
Uncirculated 1999 - 2008 quarters
from mint bags now sell for $1.00 to
$2.50
depending upon the dealer and the coin. In
June 2008 the mint will begin selling
2-roll sets, 100 and 1000 coin mint bags of the Arizona quarter.
It is quite possible that a complete collection of BU
(50 of a given mint)
state quarters in a quality holder will be worth $200 to $300 in 2 years.
It is estimated that over
140 million people are collecting
state quarters. Join in on the fun.
