Named for King George II of England, who granted James Oglethorpe a charter to find the
colony of Georgia in 1732.

Fun State Facts:
Georgia has a population of 7,421,800 10th in the nation. Its land area is 57,919 square miles,
21st in the nation. The highest point is Brasstown Bald at 4,784 feet above sea level. Historic
Savannah is one of the states great cities. The city was the first planned city in America and
was laid out by English General James Oglethorpe in 1733 into 24 public squares and
surrounding lots. Today 22 of the 24 squares have been restored to reflect the early history of
the city. Old houses and trees draped with Spanish moss make the area unique and steeped in
ghost stories. Augusta is home to the premier United States golf tournament, the Masters
which was started in 1934. Georgia is also home to the famous Vidalia onion and to Hank
Aaron's record breaking 715th home run.
