Territory Name Origin:
Before the Spanish-American War Guam had twenty different names recorded in explorer and
missionionaries' logs. It is widely speculated that phonetically these names Goaam, Goam,
Guan, Guahan("we have") in Chamorru sounded similar to Guam, hence the name.
Fun Territory Facts:
Guam has a population of 154,805. Its land area is 212 square miles, nominally 7 x 35
miles and the highest point is Mount Lamlam at 1332 feet above sea level. It was founded
by Magellen in 1521 and ceded from Spain to the United States by the Treaty of
Paris in 1898. The people of Guam have been citizens of the United States since 1950.
Anderson Air Force Base is a major base for US Pacific military operations and
is on the northern end of the island. Guam's population is mainly Chamorro. It is the
southern most island of the Mariana islands chain and is rich in history as dipicted on
it's quarter.
