The quarter's stateside face depicts the eight major islands of the state with King Kamehameha I overseeing the islands with a hardwood spear in his hand. The state motto in the Hawain language "Ua mau ke o ka 'aina i ka pono" is also on the quarter. The state has two official languages. The King lived from 1758 to 1819 and unified the islands into the Kingdom of Hawai'i in 1810. He is remembered for the "Mamalahoe Kanawai," Law of the Splintered Paddle, which protects human rights.
