State Name Origin:
From Illini, the French version of the Algonquin word meaning "men" or
"soldiers".
Fun State Facts:
Illinois has a population of 11,931,700, 6th in the nation. Its land area is 55,593
square miles,
24th in the nation. The highest point is Charles Mound at 1235 feet above sea level in the
far
northeast corner of the state. President Lincoln's face has appeared on the penny since
1909,
one hundred years after his birth. Also the Lincoln penny was the first one to have
"In God We
Trust engraved on the cent. The Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848, connects
the
Chicago River and Lake Michigan to the Illinois River and eventually to the Mississippi
River.
In the 1600's Indians used the route to get from the Mississippi to Lake Michigan via the
"Chicagoua", or Chicago Portage.
