basketball player, nineteen stars and the states motto "Crossroads of America".
The "Indy 500" car race is held every year on Memorial Day. The race which
started in 1911 is the oldest car race in the United States and also the largest single
day sporting event in the world. It is often referred to as the "Greatest Spectacle
in Racing". |

From English-speaking settlers who named the territory to mean "land of the
Indians."

Indiania has a population of 5,864,000, 14th in the nation. Its land area is
35,870 square miles, 38th
in the nation. The highest point is in Franklin Township at 1,257 feet above sea level.
The town of
Kokomo, named for the Indian Chief Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo, is known as "THE CITY OF
FIRSTS". In 1893
Mr. Haynes had the first "horseless carriage" built and pulled it out of town
with a horse and buggy
and drove it 6 miles at 7 miles per hour. The car was given to the Smithsonian Institute.
Another first
is the bull "Old Ben" who measured over 16 feet from nose to tail and weighed in
at 4720 pounds.
