Named after the Isle of Jersey in England by John Berkeley and Sir George Carteret.
Fun State Facts:
New Jersey has a population of 8,015,400 9th in the nation. Its land area is 7,419 square
miles,
46th in the nation. The highest point is High Point at 1,803 feet above sea level. New
Jersey is
surrounded by water on three sides. It
produces 2/3 of all of the eggplant in the world. George
Washington and his army crossed the Delaware River from the Pennsylvania side on Christmas
night in 1776 and surprised the British forces in Trenton. By many historians this was the
turning
point of the Revolutionary War. Two other future Presidents of the United States, James
Madison
and James Monroe crossed the river that night.
