State Name Origin:
From the Latin name Carolus, meaning "Charles." The colony was originally given
to Sir
Robert Heath by Charles I and was to be called Providence of Carolina. Carolina was
divided
into North and South Carolina in 1710.

North Carolina has a population of 7,382,500, 11th in the nation. Its land area is 48,718
square
miles, 29th in the nation. The highest point is on Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet above sea
level.
North Carolina is home to the Research Triangle Park, a unique world recognized research
complex centered between three great institutions, Duke University, University of North
Carolina,
and North Carolina State University. Smokey's Ridge near Nags Head along the outer banks
is
the largest active sand dune in the United States. It stands 140' high and on a windy day
you can
see it move.
