From the river "Ohio" which is an Irquoian Indian name meaning "great
river".
Fun State Facts:
Ohio has a population of 11,201,300, 7th in the nation. Its land area is 40,953 square
miles,
35th in the nation. The highest point is Campbell Hill at 1,549 feet above sea level.
Thomas
Edison was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847 and invented the phonograph in 1879, the
incandescent light bulb in 1879, and the motion picture camera in 1891. Neil Armstrong
lived
in Wapakoneta. Ohio and was the first man to land on the Moon in 1969. His first Historic
words were, "That's one small step for man, a giant leap for mankind".
Jack Nichlaus, the
world's greatest golfer to date was born in Columbus, Ohio. Norman Vincent Peale, a
renowned
clergyman and author of "The Power of Positive Thinking" was born in
Bowersville, Ohio.
Jesse Owens, winner of four gold medal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin grew up in
Cleveland.
