"it's generally dry and warm in this
deep canyon in the forty eighth state" quarter struck by

| The park quarter's face depicts granaries along
Marble Canyon above the Nankowea Delta of the Colorado River. This area marks the
beginning of the Grand Canyon park and is below Glen Canyon Dam. The
granaries were used to store food and seeds around 500 A.D. The Navajo Bridge, on US
Highway 89A, crossing the Colorado is a fine viewing spot of the canyon and its
features. |

While visiting the Grand Canyon travel around the area.
Magnificant rock formations abound and you stand
rather awe struck when you consider that thousands of
years ago the terrain all started out flat and mother nature
did it's thing to create such beauty. |

Park Name Origin:
Named by Explorer and Geologist John Wesley Powell,
who in 1869 was the first person to travel
down the canyon, "Its head at the confluence of the Little Colorado River, its
foot at the entrance of
Nonnow Valley; its length 238 miles." Dellenbaugh writes,
"Powell was responsible for most of the
names in the Canyon. He called it Grand Canyon on the first trip. Previously it was
the Big Canyon
or Great Canyon by the few who knew of it."
