| The park quarter's face depicts the rock
formation known as "El Capitain" at Yosemite National Park. This formation is a
3000 foot vertical wall popular to rock climbers. Perhaps equally as beautiful is the
panoramic view of Half Dome, El Capitan, and the entire park from Inspiration Point on the
south rim or Bridal Falls or Yosemite Falls. |

Park Name Origin:
The southern division of the Miwok Tribe Indians were called Ah-wah-nees, meaning
"Deep Grass Valley," which was the first name given to Yosemite Valley. When a
young Chief killed a grizzly bear they renamed their hero, Chief Yo
Semitee, which means "Grizzly Bear."
Because of a printer's error at a later date, the spelling of the tribe's name was
inadvertently changed to Yosemite.
State and National Park Fun Facts:
California has 280 state parks, 8 national parks and numerous national historic sites.
Yosemite National Park is the most famous and the 3rd most visited of our national parks
with about 3,300,000 visitors per year. Also not to be missed is Sequoia National Park and
the giant Redwoods of California and the Big Sur Coast Area along Route 1 south of San
Francisco. A white knuckle drive if you are headed south with magnificient mountain and
ocean views.
