New Mexico
"not the most famous caves in the world but a must stop
if in the Land of Enchantment - the forty seventh state"
quarter struck by

 |
| The park quarter's stateside face likely will depict
ruins in the Chaco Canyon National Historic Park. The ruins tell the tale of the Anasazi
Indians from 1000 years ago when Chaco Canyon was the hub of their culture. Casas Grande
including the Pueblo Bonito are amazing as is the "Sun Dagger" which
predicts the summer and winter solstices accurately. |

Park Name Origin:
Chacoan architecture was discovered by the Mexican Republic in 1822, and references to
Pueblo Bonito appeared as early as 1844. The name "Chaco" was first used by Lt.
James H. Simpson of the Corps of Topographical Engineers. Chaco is probably the Anglicized
version of Chaca or Chacat, which is probably from the Spanish transliteration of the
Navajo name for Chacra Mesa, namely Tzak aih--"white string of rocks."
State and National Park Fun
