National parks and other national historic sites, in their own way, tell the history of America. What is the oldest park in the United States? Boston Common wasn't originally used as a park, in the current sense of that word. Cattle grazed there as late as 1830. Elm Park in Worcester, Massachusetts claims to be the oldest area set aside by a city or town specifically for use as a public park. It was designed by Frederick Olmstead who was also the landscape architect for Central Park in NYC.
