Territory Name Origin:
Originally in 1493 the island was called San Juan Batista (for John the Baptist) and the
present
capital San Juan called Puerto Rico ("rich port"). In 1521 the capital and
island names were reversed.
Fun Territory Facts:
Puerto Rico has a population of 3,949,000. In addition 2,700,000 Puerto Ricans live in the
United States mainland. Its land area is 3464 square miles, nominally 100 x 35 miles
and
the highest point is Cerro del Punta 4389 feet above sea level. The weather is balmy with
light ocean breezes and the temperature between 75 and 85 year round. The worlds
largest
single radio telescope is
in Arecibo. Famous Puerto ricans include golfer Juan "Chi Chi"
Rodriguez, singer Rita Moreno, baseball player Roberto Clemente. The island was
discovered in 1493 by Columbus and ceded by Spain to the United States in 1898.
