Ellington, one of America's jazz greats was born in the District. He was a great jazz composer and arranger and was noted for great tunes like "Take the A-Train", "Satin Doll",  "Perdido", and "Sophisticated Lady." His grandson now conducts the Duke Ellington Legacy Band.    New Question Bits of History Update: Hawaii, which was the last territory to become a state, has seven principal islands.
