            State Name Origin:
                                                                       What state is this.?
It is believed Samuel De Champlain coined the name from the French words
vert (green) and mont (mountain). Later, Dr. Thomas Young proposed the
current name when the state was formed in 1777.

            North Carolina

The quarter's stateside face depicts the historic first airplane flight by the Wright Brothers on December 17,  1903. Orville is flying and Wilbur observing. The flight was at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The plane went 120 feet in 12 seconds or an average of 6.82 miles per hour.
