ring-necked Pheasant, the state bird, soaring over Mount Rushmore's "Shrine of
Democracy" the faces of Presidents Geroge Washington, Thomas Jeffferson, Theodore
Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln carved in stone. The shrine was started in 1927 and took
fourteen years to build. |

South Dakota was part of the original Dakota Territory and the home of the Souix or
Dacotah
Indians.
Fun State Facts:
South Dakota has a population of 734,800, 45th in the
nation. Its land area is 75,898 square
miles,16th in the nation. The highest point is Harney Peak at 7,242 feet above sea level.
Bowdle,
population 549, claims to have the tallest water tower in South Dakota. The Souix Nation
is
comprised of the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota Indian tribes. The entire city of
Deadwood in
the Black Hills is on the National Historic Register and in the early years was one of the
west's
wildest cities. Home, during the gold rush era of the 1870's, to "Wild Bill"
Hickok, Mary Jane
"Calamity Jane" Burke, and Jack McCall among others. A must visit on vacation
time.
