The quarter's stateside face depicts a series of items unique to South Carolina. The states' nickname, tree, bird, and flower along with the state image and star for the capitol. Palmetto is any of several small, mostly tropical palms having fan-shaped leaves. The Sabal palmetto of the southeastern United States is the most unique. This species is also called the "cabbage palmetto".

State Name Origin:
From the Latin name Carolus, meaning "Charles." The colony was originally given to Sir
Robert Heath by Charles I and was to be called Providence of Carolina. Carolina was divided
into North and South Carolina in 1710.

Fun State Facts:
South Carolina has a population of 3,716,400, 26th in the nation. Its land area is 30,111 square
miles, 40th in the nation. The highest point is on Sassafras Mountain at 3,560 feet above sea level.
South Carolina was the first of eleven states to secede from the government of the United States.
Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston is the site of the first battle of the Civil War on
April 14, 1861 when the Confederate Army attacked the fort. Four years later to the day the
American Flag was again raised over the fort. Gaffney, in the northwest section of the state, has
the only peach shaped elevated steel water tank in the world. The tank is complete with a 60 foot
long leaf and 12 foot stem. It holds 1 million gallons and is called the Peachoid Water Tower.
