| The quarter's stateside face depicts the three English
ships which carried 144 passengers and crew from London, England to the first English
settlement on Jamestown Island, Virginia in 1607. The largest ship, the Susan Constant
carried 105 passengers with a crew of 17. Two smaller ships, the Godspeed and Discovery
had crews of 13 and 9. Full size replicas of these ships can be seen at the Jamestown
Settlement in Virginia. |

State Name Origin:
Named for the virgin Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I, by Sir Walter Raleigh, who first
visited its shores in 1584.

Virginia has a population of 6,709,100, 12th in the nation. Its land area is 39,598 square
miles,
37th in the nation. The highest point is on Mount Rogers at 5.729 feet above sea level.
Virginia
is home to Mount Vernon, George Washington home. Recently reconstructed in detail was
President Washington's 16 sided treading barn for processing and storing wheat. Colonial
Williamsburg is a magnificent restoration of the original Williamsburg of the 1700's and
close
to Jamestown. Fantastic plantations are along Route 5 and the James River .
